" The Girl I left Behind " est à l'origine une chanson folklorique anglaise datant de l' époque élisabéthaine. On dit qu'elle était jouée quand les soldats partaient pour la guerre. Le titre du tableau d' Eastman Johnson , réalisé peu après la guerre civile américaine , est tiré de cette ballade.

La chanson est une reprise de Candle in the Wind, crée en hommage à la princesse Diana. Son deces ainsi que celui de son ami Giani Versace font sombrer le chanteur dans une profonde dépression. Il ne veut même pas participer aux funérailles. Remontant peu à peu la pente, il décide toutefois de rendre hommage à Diana. En raison du peu de temps disponible, il parait impossible d'écrire une nouvelle chanson. Ils décide donc de réécrire les paroles de Candle in the Wind
