La genèse de la chanson remonte à 1973 Selon Paul Roberts, «le siège du conducteur» ne concerne pas la conduite, mais plutôt «des pensées et des émotions fragmentées et conflictuelles qui pourraient suivre la rupture d’une relation». L'une des décisions clés dans l'organisation de la chanson était de commencer par la batterie et d'introduire progressivement d'autres instruments.
"Driver's Seat" est une chanson de 1978 du groupe britannique Sniff 'n' the Tears qui figure sur leur premier album, Fickle Heart. Le groupe est considéré comme une merveille à un coup puisque "Driver's Seat" était leur seul succès.
