Sir George Clausen RA (18 April 1852 – 1944), was an artist working in oil and watercolour, etching, mezzotint, dry point and occasionally lithographs.
Clausen became one of the foremost modern painters of landscape and of peasant life, influenced to a certain extent by the impressionists, with whom he shared the view that light is the real subject of landscape art. His pictures excel in rendering the appearance of things under flecking outdoor sunlight, or in the shady shelter of a barn or stable.
Clausen (1852-1944) appartient, comme Lavery, à la génération des peintres britanniques au confluent du réalisme et d'un impressionnisme tempéré qu'ils ne poussent pas jusqu'à la dissolution de la forme. Si Clausen détaille les machines, les tubes incandescents et l'architecture industrielle, il semble cependant plus intéressé encore par les jeux du soleil à travers les verrières, les obliques des rayons, les gradations de luminosité, de sorte que l'intérêt historique de la toile s'en trouve considérablement affecté.
