Interviewé peu de temps après la sortie de « Père et Fils », Stevens declare: « Je ne l'ai jamais vraiment compris mon père, mais il m'a toujours laissé faire ce que je voulais, « Father And Son » est pour les personnes qui ne peuvent pas se détacher. La chanson evoque un père refusant le désir d'un fils de rompre pour une nouvelle vie. Pour faire écho à cela, Stevens chante dans un registre plus profond pour les lignes du père, tout en utilisant un ton plus émotif pour ceux du fils.
« Père et Fils » est une chanson populaire écrite et interprétée par la chanteuse anglaise-compositeur-interprète, Yusuf Islam (alors connu sous le nom de Cat Stevens) sur son album de 1970 pour le thé Tillerman.
Cat Stevens a écrit à l'origine « Père et Fils » dans le cadre d'un projet musical proposé avec l'acteur Nigel Hawthorne appelé Revolussia, qui concernait la révolution russe; la chanson mettait en scene un garçon qui voulait se joindre à la révolution contre la volonté de son père. Le projet fut abandonné lors d'une période d'un an de récupération après un combat soudaine de la tuberculose et un collapsus pulmonaire; « Père et Fils » est resté, dans un contexte plus large qui reflète non seulement le conflit social du temps de Stevens, mais aussi des générations plus âgées et les jeunes en général.
