copyright: © Parmi tous les primitifs flamands, Hugo van der Goes est le seul à prendre une épaisseur humaine, le seul qui semble avoir été autre chose qu’un brave artisan respectueux de la tradition médiévale. Souvent on l’a même assimilé au “génie” de la Renaissance, tourmenté par l’influence néfaste de Saturne, planant loin au-dessus du commun des mortels mais toujours prêt à sombrer dans la folie. Le style très personnel de Van der Goes apporta une nouvelle vigueur à l’art flamand au moment où de nombreux épigones de Rogier van der Weyden transformaient en formules aisées l’art élégant de cet artiste.
