Fondé en 1989 à Buffalo Mercury Rev est un groupe underground culte de rock psychédélique et de pop onirique dont l'art culmina en 1998 avec l'album Deserter's Songs. Quatre ans après un retour en forme d'espoir avec l'album The Light In You, le groupe renaît avec ce nouveau projet Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited. Le combo revisite ainsi le chef-d’œuvre oublié de la chanteuse country soul Bobbie Gentry.

La chanteuse californienne Bobbie Gentry alias Roberta Lee Streeter est admirée par tous les amateurs de country et de pop psychédélique des années 60. Connue du grand public pour son tube Ode To Billie Joe sorti en 1967, l'artiste était une pionnière, contrôlant sa musique et sa carrière, exprimant ses talents de songwriter dans un cocktail savant de country, pop, southern soul et folk. En 1968, elle sort The Delta Sweete, un album concept aux arrangements précurseurs où elle narre la vie moderne du Deep South américain.

Pour revisiter cet album culte Mercury Rev a fait appel à un casting féminin de haute volée : Norah Jones, Hope Sandoval, Beth Orton, Rachel Goswell, Vashti Bunyan, Marissa Nadler, Susanne Sundfør, Phoebe Bridgers, Kaela Sinclair, Carice Van Houten, Laetitia Sadier. Le premier titre dévoilé, Sermon, est interprété ici par la chanteuse country de Nashville Margo Price, révélée sur le label de Jack White Third Man Records.
