Mitchell a écrit "Both Sides, Now" en mars 1967, inspiré par un passage de Henderson the Rain King, un roman de 1951 de Saul Bellow. Au début du livre, Henderson the Rain King est aussi dans un avion. Il est en route pour l'Afrique et il baisse les yeux et voit ces nuages. J'ai posé le livre, j'ai regardé par la fenêtre et j'ai vu des nuages aussi, et j'ai immédiatement commencé à écrire la chanson. Je n'avais aucune idée que la chanson deviendrait aussi populaire qu'elle l'a fait.
"Both Sides, Now" est une chanson de Joni Mitchell et une de ses chansons les plus connues. Enregistré pour la première fois par Judy Collins en 1967, il est ensuite apparu sur l'album Clouds de Mitchell en 1969. Elle a ré-enregistré la chanson dans une version plus riche et orchestrée pour son album 2000 Both Sides Now; cette version a ensuite été présentée sur la bande originale du film 2003 Love Actually.
Rolling Stone a classé "les deux côtés, maintenant" # 171 sur sa liste des 500 plus grandes chansons de tous les temps.
